Into the Night...
(B.F.A. Thesis)
As a child, I was fascinated with the night. It was a forbidden hour when playtime was over. Familiar places were transformed into chimerical spaces. Reality became dreamlike. Things were not as they seemed to me. Now, as an adult, I have begun to photograph places, which have no specific bearing to my childhood, yet they are reminiscent of the memories.
My equipment informs my images. I built a large format 4x5 camera and attached a plastic lens. This lens is fixed which offers me with limited control. The circular vingetting simulates the experience of gazing into these landscapes. I am only able to control the camera’s vantage point, focus, and time. The construction of camera distorts the image so that aberrations are created. Visions of reverie become apparent. These layers of chance and unexpectancy enable the outcome of the images.
My use of color film with long exposures lasting from two seconds to half an hour creates unnatural color shifts. I edit the colors digitally to recall my perception of the nighttime. Final prints are 30”x30” printed with light jet technology. The large images open a narrative for one to enter.
These landscapes and seascapes exist in a timeless realm where the source of light from both solar and lunar becomes indiscernible. Just as day and night, dreams are transformed into a photographic metaphor.
